Placement update and upcoming tasks

There is a lot going on in my placement right now, so I thought I'd give you an update.

Last week I presented my proposal to Jeroen, Inge, Chrisje and Maartje about the integration of CSE into PPIEE. They thought it was great! It is really very cool when you present something at a meeting and the discussion becomes how can we implement what she is proposing. They decided to present it to the program board later in the week. Afterwards, they had some suggestions (which I happen to agree with), but were otherwise excited about the proposal. So, my first task will be to update and edit the proposal to a final state. I met with both Chrisje and Inge about the proposal and feel like I am in a good state to finish it soon!

Here are their suggestions:

Firstly, they want a third course called Technology in the Social Profit sector, which would go over adaptive and assistive technologies that exists. This is currently in the CSE curriculum. They also want the Business in the Social Profit Sector to be called Organizations in the Social Profit Sector. Finally, they want the credits to be smaller for the courses.

The biggest (and my favorite suggestion) would be to make the UCD in the Social Profit Sector course be only about UCD and have a separation of the students. Those who are interested can do projects in the Social Profit Sector and read examples, but the rest of the students can take the UCD course and focus on whatever they want. Jeroen wants to make this course high priority for all students in PPIEE, which would be amazing! Inge and Jan will have their hands full!

After the proposal is finished, I will be helping Chrisje with the marketing and creation of a brochure insert for CSE.

Now onto the other half of my placement, the development of the Social Ingenius program:

Jan thought that it would be very valuable to do a workshop on UCD for Jan and Inge to develop a course. The plan for next week is that in Leuven I would run a workshop for Jan and Inge along with a few of their colleagues to teach some UCD theories and ideas as well as develop their three credit course for next semester. I will be running the workshop and preparing everything. Should be great! I'm excited.

I will also be gathering UCD teaching material, both webinars and readings for the students in CSE and the Social Ingenius program. I have been reaching out to the UOCD professors at Olin College to get some insight as to what is currently going on in the course.

Finally, we have CSE on Friday to attend!

While abroad in my Junior Semester, I will be writing two blogs, one about my travels, adventures and new experiences. This is where I will talk about everything with living and being a student in Leuven, as well as any travel and trips that I go on throughout the semester. The second blog will be academically focused on the class I will be helping develop. This will keep track of my contributions and reactions to helping revolutionize engineering education and bring Olin’s teaching methods to Leuven, Belgium.
