There is a lot going on in my placement/OSS right now, so I thought I would write a summary of what has happened in the past week and what will be upcoming in the future.
This past Wednesday, I met with Chrisje to go over where I am with the placement. We discussed the conclusions that I’ve come to, the observations that I’ve made and the blog posts that I’ve written. She was quite happy with the work I’d done and thinks that I’ve made great suggestions for the integration (yay!). To move forward, she suggested that I write a formal report and presentation of my recommendations for the integration of CSE and PPIEE. So, I plan on working on this report and presentation over the next week.
We also discussed another aspect to think about when moving forward. Evaluation is going to be a difficult aspect of the integration. CSE is currently pass/fail while PPIEE requires grades. The project aspect of CSE will go into the current PPIEE project aspects, but the courses need to develop a grading system. Also, the current system for grading the PPIEE projects could use reviewing. So, I can look at how they grade the projects and although I can’t change the learning objectives, I can suggest updates to how they are weighted and the descriptions and smaller points in the learning objectives. This work will be a bit in the future, but I have the materials required to (and the insight from our conversation) to get started
On Friday, I met with Jeroen, who is the Program Director of PPIEE. He was also quite pleased with my recommendations. He gave me a very realistic view of looking forward. Although what I’m suggesting can’t be implemented next year, he thinks it is the direction the program should be going into for a complete integration. He was curious to see if all parts of the integration would agree to it, but was very positive. This was great feedback to get and I have a good idea of where to go with the reports. We also discussed the evaluation aspect and there were a lot of questions that were floating around that needed answers. I look forward to showing him my reports.
On Friday and Saturday we had CSE face-to –face contact hours. Most of this time was a guest speaker that was a discussion on Socio-technical Systems Design. The time in class continues to help me develop my perspective of CSE and the conversations that I’m able to have with the students and with Inge during it helps me bring my thoughts together.
On Tuesday I will meet with two students in PPIEE, one who is doing a start-up project and one who is doing an in-company project. Hopefully this will give me insight into the current set-up for evaluation and the blogs that they have to do. If these students are interested in design, the discussions will also help me with my reports. When I talked to the students in the team projects, I had a lot of great discussions about UCD, what they thought of the program and what they are getting out of it, so hopefully these conversations will be the same.
The following week, I will be switching gears and working with the department heads of Thomas Moore to help them set up their Society Certificate for next year. I have interviews in Mechelen on Tuesday and Geel on Friday. I will be interviewing them to get information to develop the 3 ECTS course which will be a required elective to get the Society Certificate about UCD. The rest of the Society Certificate will be the students choosing Social Profit projects when in their project based courses. So, I have been and will continue to prepare for these interviews so that I can be well informed for them.
On top of all of that, I have the report and presentation that I would like to have finished soon. The future holds three things, the development of the 3 ECTS Thomas Moore Course, discussing evaluation of PPIEE & CSE, and (if it goes through and they want the help with it) more formal ideas for the CSE UCD course that I’m suggesting should be developed.
